"I Remember"

REDD STEWART
Ambridge Music, Inc.
(11 Selections – Playing Time 27:16)

Redd Stewart is universally recognized for co-writing (with Pee Wee King) the two crossover classics, Tennessee Waltz and Bonaparte’s Retreat, both of which have been recorded by dozens of artists and have sold in the millions. While Pee Wee King has reaped the rewards of this success with his 1974 induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame, somehow Redd Stewart, who passed away August 2, 2003, at age 80, remains on the outside looking in. That doesn’t sit well with his offspring and they’re doing something about it with the release of this album showcasing both the vocal and songwriting talents of Redd Stewart.

The huge popularity of Tennessee Waltz and Bonaparte’s Retreat (and other Stewart / King compositions like Slow Poke, You Belong To Me, etc.) has overshadowed the fact that Redd Stewart was a truly great vocalist, although his work in that regard was mostly identified as a member of the Pee Wee King “band”, and not as a solo artist. Stewart’s voice is mellow and smooth and fits snugly between Faron Young and Marty Robbins (good company) – so you’re in for a treat with this collection of Stewart’s past recordings, assembled here by his son Bill Stewart to help perpetuate the Redd Stewart musical legacy and encourage his overdue induction in to the Hall of Fame.

In addition to the Stewart / King classics Tennessee Waltz and Bonaparte’s Retreat performed here by Stewart we also hear versions of other Redd Stewart solo compositions like the title track I Remember, as well as Sunshine Over The Hill, Dreaming Again and Talk To The Angels. Stewart was equally adept at singing songs written by others, and on this album we’re treated to versions of the Hank Williams nugget Cold Cold Heart, Fred Rose’s My Home Is The Dust Of The Road, the Don Gibson tune Having Second Thoughts; and Bimbo, a song popularized by Jim Reeves. The album is supported by a booklet containing song lyrics and historical photographs.
