The five orchestras of the Knoxville Youth Orchestra Association will take over the Tennessee Theatre at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 for a concert that will feature the Junior Philharmonia, Philharmonia, Sinfonia, Youth Chamber Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra. "We have young musicians coming from as far away as Kingsport and Kentucky to play in our orchestras," said Sande MacMorran, music director for the Youth Orchestra Association. "The parent support for all levels of our orchestras is incredible," he said. MacMorran, who has worked with the KYOA for 30 years, is justifiably proud of the success of the program. "We have some 260 students in our orchestras," he said. "I think one of the marks of success of our program is that nobody quits. The only reason anyone drops out is that their parents take them out because their academics slip." "We have an unusually large number of all-state players in our orchestras," he said. "More then any other youth organization in the state." The result is that competition to get into the program is very stiff. "The wind and brass players are very competitive in the East Tennessee area," he pointed out. "And almost all of our string players in the Youth Orchestra have come up through the younger programs." The youngest group of players, the Junior Philharmonia, composed of beginner string players, directed by Erin Archer, will open Monday's program with arrangements of Haydn's "St. Anthony Chorale" and the "Jupiter" section of Holst's "The Planets." The Philharmonia, composed of players with some orchestral experience, directed by Katie Hutchinson, will play O'Neil's "The Japanese Cricket," Silva's "Tour of California" and an arrangement of "The Tennessee Waltz." The association's largest string ensemble, the Sinfonia, made up of players with at least three years experience, led by Kathy Hart-Reilly, will play pieces from Kerr's "American Serenade" and Smith's "Elephas Maximus." The Youth Chamber Orchestra, intermediate string players conducted by Wesley Baldwin, will perform Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain and movements from Mendelssohn's "Sinfonia No. 9 in C Minor." The Youth Orchestra, directed by MacMorran will play selections from Richard Rodgers' "The King and I" and "South Pacific." We are playing these pieces because this style of great Broadway music is music they will play their entire lives," MacMorran said. |
